Missing 3-Year-Old Is Believed to Be Dead, Police Say

Missing N. Carolina Girl's Body Found in Creek After Man Charged With Hiding Death

Investigators think the girl is dead, but they have not found her body, the sheriff's office said in a statement that did not say how authorities think the girl was killed. The search is now a recovery effort.

Kimrey allegedly "failed to notify a law enforcement authority of the death of Mariah Woods, and secretly disposed of the dead child's body", according to the warrant.

Kimrey is now being held in the Onslow County Detention Center with bail set at $1,010,000.

Due to evidence gathered during the course of the investigation, the Sheriff's Office said it believes Mariah is deceased. We have got to find her.

Her mom says Mariah woke up in the middle of the night and her boyfriend told her to go back to sleep.

WCTI spoke with a 23-year-old Newport, North Carolina woman Wednesday who said she was the woman pictured in the surveillance photos.

An arrest has been made in connection with the disappearance of 3-year-old Mariah Woods.

A statement from the Federal Bureau of Investigation said Friday's initial search finished more quickly than anticipated because of the number of people who turned out. Woods reported Mariah missing about 6 a.m. Monday, when an Amber Alert was issued. The FBI said Thursday that it is testing "items of interest" at its lab in Quantico, Virginia.

Authorities say the man charged in the disappearance of a young North Carolina girl is the boyfriend of the child's mother. ABC News reports that her mother reached out to the public in an emotion-filled plea Monday.

FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Stanley Meador said authorities spent days searching by foot, boat and in the water for any leads. "She's my baby. She's my everything".

Residents were moved to action following Woods' public appeals for help in the search for her "very sweet, loving girl" with blue eyes and long brown hair. Marines based at nearby Camp Lejeune are also assisting in the search.

The FBI estimates that 600 people turned out to join the search for a missing North Carolina child, and some had to be turned away.
