Microsoft plans upgrade for Redmond headquarters

Artist rendering shows the planned redevelopment including the removal of 12 buildings and the construction of 18 new ones along with open spaces and sports fields

A blog post by Microsoft president Brad Smith said the expansion, which is scheduled to begin in autumn next year, would also include public spaces, sports fields and green spaces. Now, we can add Microsoft to the growing list of companies looking to spruce up their campus.

Microsoft is planning to overhaul its Redmond (Seattle), Washington campus in a multibillion-dollar operation that will take between five and seven years to complete.

Several of the new Microsoft buildings will be four stories tall and centered on a new 2-acre plaza where events can be held - giving the campus a bit of an urban vibe, Smith said. The company says the expansion marks a commitment to their employees, the community, and the entire Puget Sound.

Microsoft will tear down 12 existing buildings, including the iconic but outdated X-shaped low-rises that were the company's original Redmond home.

Microsoft says that the new campus will be more open and less formal. It'll feature work areas that are divided into a series of "team neighborhoods" with plenty of natural light, an environment that Smith believes will foster the type of creativity needed for ongoing innovation in the tech industry.

Microsoft has already informed the employees about the plans, and on Wednesday, the company would discuss the plans at the shareholders meeting.

Microsoft announced the development to employees Tuesday evening.

As our employees create the tools and services of the future workspace for our customers, it's important they have a campus that reflects that future for themselves. The campus will also have facilities for cricket and soccer, walking and running trails as well as retail space so that its neighbors can also enjoy it. Overall, the campus will be designed more for pedestrians and usage of the local light rail, which will reach the campus by then based on the region's current plan. And we will continue to be Energy Smart, using Azure for building system monitoring to optimize our energy usage and reduce our carbon footprint.
