5 possible head coach replacements for Mike Riley

Nebraska Athletic Director Bill Moos said Saturday the football program wasn't progressing like he hoped it would, which is why he fired Mike Riley.

Moos did not give a timeline for when the next Nebraska head football coach might be named, but said that they're now in a full-fledged search for the next head coach.

The Nebraska football season came to an unceremonious end in Memorial Stadium on Friday as the Iowa Hawkeyes dropped in to dump 56 points on the Huskers.

Nebraska was just 19-19 in three seasons under Riley, and the program has clearly taken a step back - and is nowhere near where fans and boosters expect it to be. Nebraska will move quickly in its search to secure a new head coach and Moos has appointed Assistant Coach Trent Bray, who coaches Husker linebackers, to serve as head coach in the interim.

"I told the players today nobody wants to go 4-8", Moos said.

A press conference is scheduled for 1 p.m.

On Monday, Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports wrote that Riley is "destined" to get fired, with Central Florida's Scott Frost looking like a potential option to replace him. He's in the heat of trying to win a conference championship, he's obviously a Nebraskan and he's getting a lot of attention from several other schools.

Iowa's defense also picked off Nebraska QB Tanner Lee 3 times.
