The phallic outline over Okanogan County in the western USA state of Washington provoked much mirth online.

The incident was discovered after viewers sent multiple pictures to KREM-TV in Spokane showing skywriting of what appeared to be male genitalia. The official said they "cannot police morality".

"We have grounded the aircrew and are conducting a thorough investigation - and we will hold those responsible accountable for their actions", officials wrote in a statement.

The Naval Air Station at Whidbey Island touts itself as the "premier naval aviation installation in the Pacific Northwest".

The U.S. Navy admitted Friday that one of its aircrafts was used to draw a giant penis in the sky over Washington state.

Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that they can not do anything about phallic sky drawings unless there is some sort of proven safety risk.

A local mother told KREM 2 she was upset she might have to explain what the images were to her young children.

The Federal Aviation Administration, a government agency that regulates US airspace, said the drawings did not appear to pose a safety risk and it "cannot police morality".
