Nintendo's Mario Brothers To Be Turned Into a Movie

Nintendo Reportedly Bringing Mario To The Big Screen Once Again

Here's hoping that Nintendo and Universal are able to reach a deal concerning a Mario movie and that the film is at least better than the aforementioned Super Mario Brothers.

One of the main requirements for Nintendo, according to the report, is a certain degree of creative control over its signature character, perhaps the most recognizable video game face of all time.

Nintendo is reportedly in the late stages of talks with Minions animation studio Illumination to secure the license to create an animated Super Mario Bros. movie. According to the site talks have been ongoing for a year but it is only now close to completion, with the deal apparently for one film.

Illumination, which is behind the Despicable Me franchise and subsequent spin-offs, declined to comment. Furthermore, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto will most likely serve as a producer.

It's easy to see why Nintendo hasn't made a film in a while; most movies based on video games are bad. The live-action film starred Bob Hoskins as Mario (Tom Hanks was originally signed on, but the studio felt Hoskins was more bankable), John Leguizamo as Luigi and Dennis Hopper as King Koopa. This can be the next awaited animated film of Hollywood.

This reveal comes on the heels of the mammothly successful Super Mario Odyssey video game for the Nintendo Switch, and is likely a great move to help capitalize on the character's continuing success.
