Venus-Jupiter conjunction: How and where to watch the planetary event

Incredible new images show Jupiter and Venus side by side

As most planets in the Solar System orbit the Sun on a similar plane, from the Earth's point of view, they follow a more or less similar travel path across the sky.

The painted message sequence, indicating the exact time of the appearance of Mars, Jupiter, Venus and the moon in the morning sky in each of those days.

However, while it might look like worlds are about to collide, Venus and Jupiter will in reality be hundreds of millions of miles apart.

The planets will appear in conjunction in the south-east, just above the horizon, and may appear to look like one bright star.

The conjunction also happened in 2015 and 2016, when the two planets appeared even closer together.

You should go out about 45 minutes before sunrise, and can expect a better a view if you stand on a hilltop or balcony, according to EarthSky.

It is the unusual proximity that will make the event bigger, although Venus will still be 246 million kilometers from Earth, while Jupiter is nearly 594 million miles away from us.

Jupiter will pass Venus in a low but close and spectacular conjunction on early Monday morning, media reports said.

The space agency advises caution when looking at the event, as the approaching sunrise could damage vision if people accidentally look at it, especially with enhancement devices like binoculars or telescopes.

Viewers in NY will see the Jupiter rise first at 5.26am, with Venus coming at 5.31am, according to Space.com.
