Three UCLA basketball players can not leave their Chinese hotel after being arrested for allegedly shoplifting.

The championship and consolation games are the next day.

Freshmen LiAngelo Ball, Cody Riley and Jalen Hill have remained in a hotel in Hangzhou to await further developments in the legal process while their Bruins teammates traveled to Shanghai for the team's season opener Friday against Georgia Tech, according to a person close to the situation who was not authorized to publicly disclose that information. This marks the third consecutive year that a team from the Pac-12 Conference, to which UCLA belongs, will play a regular season game on Chinese soil. The players returned to the Hangzhou Hyatt Regency hotel. According to a source, they were released at around 4 a.m. on Wednesday.

One such former pro is Devean George, who played in the National Basketball Association for 11 seasons, seven of those with the Los Angeles Lakers, who gave his reaction to Ball's situation.

UCLA had said on Tuesday that it was "aware of a situation involving UCLA student-athletes" and was cooperating with local authorities, but otherwise declined to comment.

Scott did not elaborate on what occurred and said the league was directing all inquiries about the specifics of the matter to UCLA.

LaVar Ball, the father of the Ball athlete family, isn't anxious.

"Whether in the United States or overseas, we expect our student-athletes to uphold the highest standards", it said.

LaVar and his wife, Tina, reportedly ate breakfast with the UCLA team on Wednesday morning.

LiAngelo plans to join his brother Lonzo in the National Basketball Association next year, according to the boys' father, LaVar Ball, who has himself cultivated a certain notoriety in sports media for being brash and outspoken. Everybody making it a big deal. Georgia Tech said none of its athletes were involved.
