Twitter doubling its character count to 280 in almost all languages

Twitter Expands Character Limit to 280

Twitter originally hit on the 140-character limit as a nod to the character limits placed on early text messages, when it was founded in 2007. But now, most people use Twitter through its mobile app; the 140-character limit is no longer a technical constraint but nostalgia.

The change won't apply to Chinese, Japanese, or Korean languages because the density of their writing allows users to say more with fewer characters.

During the first few days of the test many people Tweeted the full 280 limit because it was new and novel, but soon after behavior normalized (more on this below).

The move modifies a fundamental aspect of Twitter.

Trump continues to use Twitter as his primary platform, a trend he started well before he entered the presidential election. So in other words, although more characters were available, people still kept tweets in English short and sweet.

The announcement reignited the conversation about whether 280 characters was something people on Twitter wanted or needed. According to the company, just 5% of tweets sent during the trial period were over 140 characters, and only 2% exceeded 190.

"People in the experiment told us that a higher character limit made them feel more satisfied with how they expressed themselves on Twitter, their ability to find good content, and Twitter overall", wrote Aliza Rosen, Twitter's product manager. "But that didn't happen". Some Twitterati think brevity is the soul of the service and worry the longer form will ruin what's special about it.

NO! The beauty of @Twitter is fitting sense (and nonsense) into that character space. Twitter will be spoiled by TROLLS, If it increases. After awhile, we'll stop noticing long tweets in our newsfeeds (unless they keep getting bounced to the top, in case we missed them), but right now, Twitter is rubbing a lot of people the wrong way with this move. In its current form, Twitter has proved cumbersome for new users, yet each time the company tries to change an important feature, heavy users complain.

Last quarter, Twitter reported 330 million monthly active users, up 4% from the same time previous year.
