The Koenigsegg Agera RS hit 284 miles per hour

Koenigsegg Agera RS

Per the standard format for setting a land speed record, Lilja made two runs in opposite directions within the space of an hour to eliminate the effects of gradients and wind, with the two recorded speeds then averaged. On Saturday, factory driver Niklas Lilja reached 277.9 miles per hour (447.1km/h) in one of the company's Agera RS hypercars. The above video shows just that and features Koenigsegg factory driver Niklas Lilja hitting almost 300 miles per hour.

This means the vehicle has dethroned the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, the magazine says, which set the previous record with a speed of 268mph in 2010. The closure was set to be in place for two days but the Koenigsegg team broke the record early on the first day. It managed the feat in 37.28 seconds, 26.88 seconds of which were used to reach the top speed of 400 km/h (249 mph).

Equipped with a 5.0L V8 twin-turbo engine delivering 1,160 hp, the Agera RS (limited to 25 units built) could have driven even faster if it had been fitted with tires more specifically designed for extreme temperature and pressure conditions than the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires it drove on.

All that remains is for the world speed record, which was recorded and verified by Racelogic, to be officially recognised.

Special mention should be made regarding the tires the Agera RS was running. It recently announced that the successor to the Venom GT, the 1600-bhp Venom F5, could break the 300-mph limit.

Over the weekend Koenigsegg took it Agera RS out to a closed off 11-mile stretch of public highway in Nevada and set off to clobber Bugatti.
