Amazon Debuts $50 'Basic' Fire TV Stick for International Users

The Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote only costs $40, and as its name suggests, comes with a remote that has Alexa built-in. It's called the Fire TV Stick Basic Edition, and it costs about $50. Now, they can watch Prime Video on the big screen with the Amazon Fire TV Stick. Simply plug it in, connect to Wi-Fi, and start streaming in minutes. In other words, we're looking at a 1.3 GHz quad-core MediaTek processor, 1 GB of RAM, and 8 GB of native storage.

"Last year, we made Amazon Prime Video available to customers globally, and today, we're building on that momentum as we introduce Fire TV Stick Basic Edition to new customers around the world", said Marc Whitten, Vice President, Amazon Fire TV, in a statement. It supports 1080p HD streaming, but does not boast support for 4K or HDR streaming like the new Fire TV model.

This streaming media player lets customers access TV shows, apps and games on their TV, launching in over 100 countries and territories worldwide, building on Amazon's launch of Prime Video past year. It also allows users access to several music and gaming apps.

For many in Europe, streaming Amazon Prime is spotty unless the user has a Chromecast, set-top box, or TV that supports it. Amazon hopes that making it easier to stream content will motivate more folks to subscribe to Prime or Prime Video. There's also a 4K HDR version of Fire Stick for $69 United States dollars, which could eventually reach Canada at some point, too.

So what gives? One possible explanation is that Amazon does intend to sell the Fire TV Basic in Australia eventually, but doesn't want to do so until it can sell through the actual.com.au site, whenever that happens. Another thing to point out here is that Amazon is advertising the Basic Edition as having a $49.99 price tag, but its pricing may still vary depending on the customer's location.

The new Basic Edition is available in over 100 countries and territories.
