Michael Emenalo quits Chelsea in blow to Roman Abramovich

Michael Emenalo Slammed Spurs

Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo has stepped down after a decade working at Stamford Bridge.

Arguably owner Roman Abramovich's most trusted lieutenant, Emenalo has often been viewed as a controversial figure at the club.

The former Nigeria global acted as a link between the squad and Chelsea's board, and had an influence on transfers and developing players from the academy.

"Sources have suggested that Emenalo does not wish to engage in a three-way power battle with Conte and Granovskaia who are known not to see eye to eye".

According to ESPN FC's Liam Twomey, it is unknown what impact his departure will have on the way Chelsea make decisions as a club and in the transfer market.

Emenalo has been a driving force behind the club's policy to send a host of young starlets away from the club to further develop and Chelsea now have 34 players out on loan.

Emenalo said it had been a hard decision to make, adding: "I have had the privilege to work alongside some of the most talented people in the world of sport over the past 10 years and I will depart incredibly proud of the achievements we have made". I wish Chelsea every success and look forward to following the club's future triumphs from afar, ' he added.

The former Notts County defender joined Chelsea in October 2007 and has been technical director since July 2011.

It's understood that Antonio Conte was not an admirer of Emenalo, who was a key player in recruitment, although the latter remained supportive of the Italian coach.

Chelsea said the club will be reviewing its management structure, with the help of Emenalo.
