NFL's Houston Texans Kneel After Owner's Remark

Members of the Houston Texans kneel during the national anthem before the game against the Seattle Seahawks at CenturyLink Field on October 29, 2017, in Seattle, Washington.

Over the past two days there have been reports that players on the Texans will protest McNair's "inmate" comment by taking a knee.

The majority of the Houston Texans players staged a mass protest during the national anthem prior to their game on Sunday against team owner Bob McNair's after he described players as "inmates". It's estimated that only 10 members of the team stood.

The controversy is part of a larger polemic that extends to last season, when Colin Kaepernick knelt during the national anthem to raise awareness about racial inequality. But they ultimately made a decision to sit or kneel during the anthem.

'I know they were upset, ' he told the Houston Chronicle on Saturday. "I wanted to answer their questions".

McNair, who has said he wants his players to stand during the anthem, mangled a figure of speech earlier this month by referring to National Football League players as prison inmates, faced an immediate backlash and later issued an apology.

Several players publicly came out against the owner's comments, including veteran Duane Brown.

McNair faced considerable backlash after making the comment, for which he apologized.

Most of Texans kneel as anthem began.

"I think the comments were disrespectful, I think it was ignorant, I think it was embarrassing", Brown said.

Players also remained unconvinced by the apology, according to the AP, and they told numerous media outlets that they had met to discuss how to react moving forward. Before Sunday, very few Texans had been protesting other than on September 24, when 200 players around the league protested following President Donald Trump's criticism.
