Texans owner under fire for comment on National Football League demonstrations

In a piece for ESPN The Magazine, Seth Wickersham and Don Van Natta Jr. revealed the complex details inside the National Football League owners meeting with the players, from last week which included quotes from some of the owners, including the Houston Texans' Bob McNair.

At the time, McNair apologized to Vincent but after word spread to the public, the Texans released an official statement on Friday apologizing for his thoughtless remarks.

On Friday, October 27, McNair issued a public apology.

As NFL owners met as protests swallowed the league following comments by President Donald Trump, McNair made the comment that "we can't have the inmates running the prison", in regard to the player protests.

He's since apologized, saying he used a figure of speech that was never meant to be taken literally, and that he would never characterize the players or league that way. I used a figure of speech that was never meant to be taken literally.

"From a player's perspective, I think we've done a great job of trying to work in a collaborative manner with the league to really come up with solutions, to move forward and create some real change, and I don't see that changing", said Jenkins. Although Hopkins was the only player to miss practice, many considered following suit and staging a walkout. "It's frightful. It's frustrating". "I'm not surprised by it".

But his own team debated walking out in protest of its owner's comment. Sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter that Hopkins' absence from practice was directly related to McNair's comment. Jets linebacker Demario Davis said he hadn't heard about it until today and therefore didn't feel comfortable sharing any feelings.

The report said Goodell and NFL executives did not implement a league-wide mandate against protests during the meeting.

Washington owner Dan Snyder responded to Jones by saying he shared in his concerns, which is when McNair reportedly drew his "inmates" analogy.

Forty-niners owner Jed York and Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie spoke next; York emphasized that each market was different while Lurie supported his players' right to kneel. With McNair funneling millions of dollars to President Donald Trump's campaign, you have to wonder if his views align with the president's which are ones that cause rifts and splits rather than unification.
