India plays New Zealand despite curator's violation of ICC regulations

Pune pitch

Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni inspects the pitch ahead of the 2nd one day global (ODI) cricket match between India and New Zealand at The Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on October 25, 2017.

In a sting operation done by a leading news production house, Salgaonkar was caught on camera revealing that the pitch will be made according to their ('bookies') demands.

India Today TV showed Salgaonkar allegedly telling their undercover reporters - who posed as bookies - he could manipulate the pitch and sharing information about the playing surface in violation of ICC's anti-corruption code.

The conversations in the released video are centred on the pitch.

"It is a very good pitch on which 337 runs will be chaseable". First innings scores in those two were 304-8 and 350-7 (an average of 327); the latter score was chased down.

Only accredited sports journalists are given access to the venue on match days and certain areas of the ground on pre-match days. He is also accused to have allowed the reporters on the pitch and tamper with it.

The reporters were allowed to walk on the middle of the pitch.

The reporters asked Salgaonkar that two players want to bounce on the pitch and if it can be done, to which Salgaonkar replied, "It will be done".

Salgaoncar represented Maharashtra as a fast bowler from 1971-82.

We have asked for a detailed report and will act upon it accordingly. "I told you this will be a 340-run wicket either way", he was quoted as saying.

Salgaonkar has also been barred from entering the ground, and the match is going ahead as planned.

Salgaoncar was dismissed by the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) and replaced by curator Ramesh Mhamunkar. An inquiry will now take place into the events. ICC observer has cleared the pitch.

"We are investigating the allegations from Pune this morning", an ICC spokesman said. "We are now looking to establish the facts and will make no further comment whilst this is ongoing".

MCA president Abhay Apte told India Today that they will also look into the matter.
