Dan Davis takes a look at the standout players in the U-17 World Cup quarter final between Mali and Ghana. In a match where smooth movement of the ball was hampered by the wet conditions under a pouring sky, Mali outsmarted Ghana by playing the best possible game. He was brought on in the 55 minute but by then it was too late as Mali had mentally drained Ghana with their tactics. But there was no impact of weather on the teams as both the sides played attacking soccer to the entire 90 minutes. Even the loose ball was struck into the side-netting by Hadji Drame, who cunningly left his marker for dead on the right channel in the sixth minute.

In the second half, Djemoussa Traore doubled Mali's lead. His nice shot beat Ghana goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim before entered into the net.

The Black Starlets tried hard to find an equaliser but Mali held on to secure the victory. Traore seized on the mistake, making use of the sodden pitch holding up possession, and drove forward towards the penalty area.

Chairman of the Local Organising Committee Praful Patel addressed the media yesterday and assured the people of Guwahati that they would not be left out of the football extravaganza and that FIFA Field Specialists are taking good care of the turf and they will get it back into proper condition within three days, just in time for 25th October's semi-final clash.

Mali continued with their repeated attempts on goal one after the other and Fode Konates right footed shot from the centre of the box was again blocked in the 27th minute.

The last twenty minutes looked anything but a quarter-final of a FIFA tournament-the pitch looked at its ugliest ever since competitive football has been played on it. The Ghanaian has revealed that Chelsea winger Eden Hazard is his greatest idol, and clearly possesses some of the Belgian's traits, with his electric pace and high standard of deliveries on show despite the narrow defeat to Mali.
