John Kelly Charms Press At Briefing Urging Them To "Develop Better Sources"

"I'm not quitting, I'm not getting fired", he said on Thursday during an unscheduled appearance at a regular White House press briefing.

One of the men protecting the USA from "chaos", in the provocative words of Republican Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Bob Corker, surprised reporters on Thursday by conducting the White House's daily news briefing himself. "The Chief is doing a FANTASTIC job for me and, more importantly, for the United States of America!"

President Donald Trump is planning to nominate Kirstjen Nielsen to succeed John Kelly as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Politico, Reuters and other outlets reported on Wednesday, citing unnamed sources. Of course, he didn't use that word, but I think that's a fair paraphrase of what he said. Since his appointment, he's been the subject of a constant stream of media reports that paint Kelly as frustrated by the president's lack of discipline and his irrepressible tweets.

But on Thursday he was in a humorous mood and said: "You guys with the cameras always catch me when I'm thinking hard, and it looks like I'm frustrated and mad". I don't run it.

"I'm working for someone who is dedicated to serving the country in a way he's talked about over the years", he then said of President Donald Trump.

A few times he has tweeted his frustration with diplomacy and with Tillerson, though other senior advisers - including Kelly and Defense Secretary James N. Mattis - were also known to favor diplomacy. "I just brought some organization to it". And he does not want to be judged by his ability to control the president - or the president's Twitter feed.

'I was not brought in to control him and you should not measure my effectiveness as a chief of staff by what you think I should be doing, but simply, the fact is, I can guarantee you that he is now presented with options, well thought out options, ' he explained.

"I restrict no one, by the way, to go in to see him", he said. Trump's Chief of Staff John Kelly tried to put out the fire on his own.

Insisting he did not mean to criticize Trump's predecessors, Kelly added, "but there are an terrible lot of things that got kicked down the road that have come home to roost now and have to be dealt with".

How do I know this? "There have been so many stories about the president and his frame of mind, the tenor of insider meetings", said Fleischer.

One his frustrations is you. It is astounding to me how much is misreported. I will give you the benefit of the doubt that you are operating off of contacts, leaks, whatever you call them. I would offer, though, it is not the best job I ever had.

He said Trump has also been surprised and frustrated by Congress.
