Hurricane Ophelia slowly heads toward Ireland, Azores

Current trajectories show Ophelia heading for Ireland

So, during the final third of the season, when we expect to be monitoring the Western Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico for tropical activity, all we can do is shrug our shoulders when a hurricane pops up in the central Atlantic, in October.

A STORM hurtling towards Scotland across the Atlantic has been upgraded to a hurricane, prompting concern among Brits.

Hurricane Ophelia is moving slowly in the middle of seemingly nowhere, according to the 5 a.m. advisory Thursday from the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Met √Čireann said they are keeping a close eye on Hurricane Ophelia.

Little change in strength is forecast during the next 48 hours.

Hurricane-force winds extend out 25 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend out 70 miles.

The 2017 hurricane season was forecast to be the busiest we have seen since 2010. Seemingly every thunderstorm complex in the basin turned into a hurricane over the past two months, with many undergoing "rapid intensification" and reaching the top levels of the Saffir-Simpson scale. This set up brings some similarities to Hurricane Debbie way back in 1961 that was one of the most memorable and damaging storms in Irish history, thankfully Ophelia does not appear as ominous.

Hurricane Ophelia is moving northeastwards far out over the Atlantic Ocean.

The NOAA's National Hurricane Center (NHC) has warned that the storm will batter Ireland and the United Kingdom with torrential rain and powerful gusts.

"But then it will continue its way towards the British Isles, probably reaching us very early next week".
