Trump Demands Harsh Anti-Immigration Policies

U.S. President Donald Trump descends the stairs of Air Force One using an umbrella in a heavy rain as he arrives for a fundraising event

The list was criticised by Mr Chuck Schumer and Ms Nancy Pelosi, the respective Democratic leaders in the Senate and House.

The document calls for preventing immigrants from sponsoring their extended families in moving legally to the USA and limiting such green cards to spouses and children. The set up of a wall along the U.S. -Mexico border is top in the list and efforts to fund the project are underway.

On Sunday, however, the Trump administration released a list of hard-line immigration demands that may threaten the compromise - and the status - of almost one million DACA recipients.

White House legislative affairs director Marc Short, on the other hand, believes the list is "essential to mitigate" the protection of 800,000 dreamers.

Besides overhauling the country's green-card system, the Trump administration's wish list also includes the funding of a controversial border wall along the US-Mexico border and a crackdown on unaccompanied minors entering the country.

But Democratic leaders nearly immediately denounced the demands. The Trump administration ended the program in September and gave Congress six months to come up with a legislative solution.

The Obama administration's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which was launched in 2012, allowed dreamers to apply for work and study permits.

The attorney general, Jeff Sessions, an immigration hardliner who announced the rollback of the Daca program last month, welcomed the proposals, which he said "will restore the rule of law to our immigration system, prioritize America's safety and security, and end the lawlessness".

But the president has long made a wall the centerpiece of his immigration reform, insisting it must be a part of any legislation to protect dreamers like Greisa Martinez Rosa from deportation.

Several Trump administration officials who requested anonymity asserted that Trump would not necessarily reject a DACA bill that did not include all of his immigration priorities.

The problem, she said, "cannot be bandaged over at the presidential level through another executive order that can be rescinded by a subsequent administration".

Ronald Vitiello, U.S. Customs and Border Protection's acting deputy commissioner, said the asylum system has served as a magnet for illegal immigration, contains too many loopholes and is in desperate need of reform.

Senior Democrats have sharply criticized Trump's list, saying it went "far beyond what is reasonable" and contained no attempt at compromise. Charles Schumer said in a statement. "Whether it is part of DACA or there is a different pathway to get it done, it will remain a priority", he said, adding it would be up to Trump to determine what was negotiable and what was not in a future deal.
