Microsoft kills of Groove Music streaming service, aligns with Spotify

Because it's built-in with Windows, there are probably plenty of people out there who are using Groove to manage their local music.

Groove was Microsoft's attempt to compete against popular streaming services from rivals like Apple and Google.

The Groove Music app will be updated this week for Windows Insiders with the ability to move their music to Spotify, and it will be generally available on October 9.

Launch the Groove application on a compatible device and sign in to your account if you are asked to do so.

You can read this detailed Groove Music shutdown FAQ to learn a lot more on the specifics about the service's closure (via WindowsCentral). A few clicks and a handful of minutes later, users will be able to access their old playlists on their new Spotify apps.

The next step depends on whether you are a Spotify customer already or not.

If you're on a monthly subscription, you can end the subscription or let it automatically renew. If you are not, create a Spotify account to continue with the migration. If you're a Groove Music Pass subscriber, be sure to check it out.

Microsoft also says that it will be handing out full refunds to customers that cancel their Groove Music Pass subscription within 30 days of its start. But Spotify is still much better than Groove Music in many different ways, so have a look around the app and you'll find some really nice features.

Effective immediately, Microsoft will cease the sale of Groove Music passes. Groove will receive an update on Windows 10 next week which will guide you through the process.

Groove Music Pass will remain available until December 31 when it completely shuts down.

Microsoft is dropping out of the music streaming game.

This should really help if you have lots of music stored on OneDrive that's probably not available in Spotify's catalog.

Spotify recently made its way to the Xbox, but it wasn't clear at the time that was the beginning of the end. And when the streaming service officially closes down by December 31, subscribers will be refunded pro-rata.
