Sony to launch new 'updated' Playstation VR headset

Sony PSVR 2017

It has announced that an updated PS VR headset is in the works and the new device will have model number CUH-ZVR2.

The cables to the processor unit are different as well, meaning users of the older PS VR headsets can't simply swap out the unit for the HDR compatible one.

Not only that but the PlayStation VR headset will include a new version of the Processor Unit that connects PS VR to PS4.

To determine which headset you're buying, once the new ones start rolling out, make sure you check the model number on the box.

Currently, there is no release date for the new CUH-ZVR2 model.

Japanese electronics giant Sony is set to launch an updated variant of its Playstation VR headset.

Sony notes that consumers will be able to distinguish between the older and new PSVRs though their slightly different packaging. Sony has also made the connection cable slimmer to reduce its overall profile. Their Paris Games Week 2017 Media Showcase press conference will take place on October 30 at 3pm GMT (that's 10am EST), and will feature "some spectacular new games coming to PS4 and [PlayStation VR]".

Generally speaking, this isn't the most exciting refresh in the world, but it certainly looks to rectify some of the slight design issues we experienced when testing the original headset a year ago. The unit will come in a bundle with the PlayStation Camera and it will cost ¥44,980, which translates into around $400. "The pricing of the PS VR bundles will remain the same", says the FAQ.

Back in May, Market-intelligence firm SuperData research estimated that the PSVR sold 375,000 units in Q1, beating the HTC Vive's 95,000 sales and the 64,000 units Oculus Rift shifted.

In a blog entry, Sony stated, that It has been just about a year since the dispatch of PlayStation VR. The new credit card will give five times more points for PlayStation Store purchases compared to an online or cash purchase and three times the points whenever the owner uses their cell phones to pay bills.
