Nifty ends at new peak of 10153.10, Sensex rises 151 points

Heavy fall in the rupee after the US Federal Reserve announced plan to wind down its crisis-era stimulus and hinted at another interest rate hike before the end of the year dampened the sentiment

According to market observers, caution ahead of the US Federal Open Market Committee policy meet outcome Wednesday evening (India time), along with a weak rupee, hampered the risk-taking appetite of investors.

Meanwhile, S&P BSE Sensex was trading at 32,433.02, higher by 30.65 points or 0.09% and NSE Nifty stood at 10,151.10 level, up by 3.55 points or 0.03% on Wednesday.

The 30-share index rose 93.02 points or 0.28 per cent to 32,495.39. Asian markets logged healthy gains and European shares jumped to a higher opening, tracking Wall Street hitting fresh highs on Friday ahead of this week's U.S. interest rate call and cooling North Korea tensions, traders said. The gauge had lost 21 points yesterday in a cautious trade.

The BSE market breadth was bearish with 1,311 declines and 1,293 advances.

Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services, said: "Markets continued to remain range bound as investors were stuck with a wait and watch approach ahead of the statement of FOMC meeting".

During the day, the Indian rupee strengthened by 6-7 paise to 64.26-27 against the United States dollar from its previous close at 64.33.

Market heavyweight Reliance Industries was in a sweet spot as the scrip hit a record high of Rs 872.10 (intra-day) before closing 0.85 per cent higher at Rs 847.10 after the IUC cut is seen as benefiting the company's telecom unit, Reliance Jio.

The Sensex touched a high of 32,499.88 points and a low of 32,383.82 during intra-day trade.

Among other gainers, Oil and Natural Gas Corp rose as much as 3 percent to a three-month high after Reuters reported that the oil explorer discovered reserves of about 20 million tonnes of oil and gas, citing sources.

Major gainers were L&T, Tata Motors, Bajaj Auto, Asian Paints, Bharti Airtel, NTPC, Coal India, Maruti Suzuki, Kotak Bank, Power Grid, HDFC Bank and SBI.
