Rohingya refugees are a threat to national security, Centre tells Supreme Court

Criticism Grows Against Aung San Suu Kyi Over Rohingya Crisis Nearly 400,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled Myanmar's military crackdown.

The United Nations appealed on Thursday for massive help for almost 400,000 Muslims from Myanmar who have fled to Bangladesh, with concern growing that the number could keep rising, unless Myanmar ends what critics denounce as "ethnic cleansing".

Suu Kyi, whose reputation as a human rights champion has been left battered by her response to the crisis, is to make a speech on the issue next week. It has been characterized by many as ethnic cleansing.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on Thursday condemned the crisis in Myanmar as a "shocking catastrophe", as the European Parliament demanded an immediate end to violence against Rohingya Muslims. South Africa's human rights activist and Nobel laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu rather joined the group of influential voices condemning the Myanmar government's treatment of Rohingya.

"We don't love the military, but we are together on this one", said Nyan Win, a top official of Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD), who the country's former junta had detained for almost three years.

India on Thursday extended humanitarian assistance for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh by flying down food and other essential items to the neighbour to help it deal with the huge influx of Rohingyas who have fled from Myanmar. "Not a single one of them has ever engaged in any terrorist activity", the petition said.

"We have to step up across all areas of need", he said. The people of Rohingya are being killed senselessly. "We were united in our concern about the situation" after hearing from U.N. officials who briefed the council on "the catastrophe that is befalling Rakhine state and the Rohingya there", said Rycroft.

"The evidence is irrefutable - the Myanmar security forces are setting northern Rakhine State ablaze in a targeted campaign to push the Rohingya people out of Myanmar". There is also scant sympathy among Myanmar's Buddhist majority for the Rohingya, who are branded "Bengalis"-shorthand for illegal immigrants".

Cardinal Bo said the worldwide community should be wary of describing what is happening as genocide.

This photo taken on September 6, 2017, shows the bodies of Rohingya refugees being brought to the shore of the Naf River on a boat by fellow Rohingyas in Ukhiya, Bangladesh.

"The state counsellor will explain the true situation to the world", he said.

"The situation remains, or seems, a textbook example of ethnic cleansing", U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein said.

"Unless a political solution is found there is a possibility that the entire Rohingya community may come to Bangladesh", he told AFP later.
