Booker joins Bernie Sanders' crusade

Bernie Sanders

Sens. Kamala Harris of California, Elizabeth Warren of MA and Cory Booker of New Jersey - rising party leaders and potential 2020 contenders - will be co-sponsoring the bill. Bernie Sanders' (I-Vt.) so-called "Medicare for All" bill, he followed in the footsteps of other potential 2020 Democratic presidential candidates.

"It's time to make the United States join every other major country on Earth and guarantee healthcare to all people as a right", Mr. Sanders' office wrote in an announcement on Facebook.

Sanders' bill comes as an increasing number of high-profile Democrats continue to raise their support for single-payer healthcare, or basic healthcare that is guaranteed to all citizens through the use of taxes.

The Hill called the call for co-sponsors a "key test for 2020 Democratic presidential hopefuls". Democratic lawmakers working with Sanders' office on the draft legislation were concerned about the bill's reliance on a global budget and capitated payments, "given what Republicans are now doing with per capita caps", according to the email obtained by Inside Health Policy, . As we discussed last week, this isn't single-payer, but because Medicare is a socialized system, it'd be a significant step in a progressive direction - and offer an interesting alternative to lawmakers who aren't yet on board with Sanders' model.

Warren and Harris, along with Sanders himself, have been discussed as likely candidates for president in 2020. In a single-payer structure the government pays all the medical bills. "Cory Booker (N.J.), Kamala Harris (Calif.), and Elizabeth Warren (Mass.)". In telling her side of the story, Clinton takes jabs at Sen. "I think health care should be a right to all", said Booker. With our health insurance markets collapsing under Obamacare's weight, the Democrats are seizing the opportunity, as they always do, to push the country further left.

And the way things are going, soon no Democratic leader will be able to oppose single-payer. And it's not because we don't think folks ought to have health care.

A Pew poll in January showed 60 percent of Americans said the government had a responsibility to provide health-care coverage for all, up from 51 percent the year before. Tester said "we are so far away" from that debate in both March and June. Kirsten Gillibrand has signed on to co-sponsor the legislation. Democratic activists believe the GOP's failed attempt to repeal Obamacare has strengthened the resolve of the nation's leftists.

The Vermont independent nearly stole the Democratic presidential nomination from Hillary Clinton past year.
