Hingis, a former world number one singles player who won the U.S. Open title 20 years ago, praised her partner, who is the brother of world number two Andy Murray.

"We said yes, if we go to Australia, everyone is healthy and playing".

The Scot said: "This scoring format is a lot more random than at Wimbledon".

Fleming, now national coach for Tennis Scotland, won the Delhi 2010 gold medal with Jocelyn Rae and collected eight ATP doubles titles before retiring at the beginning of the year.

"He texted me and said well done", he told reporters. Match tiebreakers come if the teams have split two sets. Asked during her press conference about her emotions, Keys joked that "I think drinks will help me through this tough time".

The unseeded Stephens used her strong defensive skills to keep rallies alive, and Keys lost too many of them while making 17 unforced errors.

Hingis, who reached No. 1 in the rankings and won five Grand Slam singles titles in the 1990s, initially quit tennis in 2002 because of foot and leg injuries, then rejoined the circuit full-time in 2006.

She will be trying to win a 25th Grand Slam title here on Sunday in the women's doubles final alongside Taiwan's Yung-Jan Chan, against the Czech Republic's Lucie Hradecka and Katerina Siniakova.

Despite being undefeated as a pair, they declined to confirm that they would definitely team up again with Hingis saying she would assess which tournaments she wants to play at the end of the season.

In July, she and her Romanian partner Monica Niculescu were overwhelmed in the women's doubles final at Wimbledon.

"It's been a lot of fun for me and a great opportunity for me to compete with Martina".
