The unseeded Stephens stunned fellow American and No. 9 seed Venus Williams, 6-1, 0-6, 7-5, in the first semifinal pairing to reach her first career Grand Slam final. While Stephens had defeated Venus Williams in the semis while Keys outplayed CoCo Vandeweghe. She hasn't been to a U.S. Open semifinal in seven years, and hasn't won a Grand Slam of any kind in more than nine years.

The 15th seed, made 17 unforced errors, compared to just two from her unseeded opponent.

"I should just retire now", Stephens joked after the match. The 24-year-old Stephens had other plans, however, as a look of fire arose in her eyes.

Stephens has burned me in her last two matches, so maybe I should trust her and finally back her to win.

Stephens will play Madison Keys, also of the USA, in Saturday's final. "If someone had told me then that I would win the US Open, 'It's impossible, ' I would say".

From 3-6 0-4 down Keys had three break points but Stephens fought back and the result was straight forward from then on as she finished her first slam title with confidence.

"She can buy me drinks, all of the drinks", said Keys with a smile.

"I really was just going match by match, just wanted to have some good ones", Keys said.

"I have no words to describe what I'm feeling, what it took to get here, just the journey I've been on, I have no words", she said.

"I was anxious about my protected ranking, and I was anxious about using my protected ranking to get in here". "I was fighting as hard as I could, as long as I could, but she stayed hot the whole time".

Keys and Stephens will put their friendship to a grand slam test when the best friends battle in the final.

She will have a chance to repeat that feat when she faces unseeded Stephens before 15th-ranked Keys playing 20th seed Vandeweghe in the second semi-final on Thursday night in NY. "I'm really sad for me, but I'm so happy for her".
