Memphis to make bid to bring Amazon to Tennessee

Amazon announced plans Thursday to invest some $5 billion in a second North American headquarters, in a fresh sign of the phenomenal growth of the diversified United States technology giant.

Amazon officials said they would to invest more than $5 billion in construction and operations for the headquarters, generating up to 50,000 high-paying jobs.

"We expect HQ2 to be a full equal to our Seattle headquarters", Jeffrey P. Bezos, founder and chief executive of Amazon, said in a statement. The company estimates that investments in Seattle between 2010 and 2016 added $38 billion to the city's economy.

Asked whether Raimondo would try to convince Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and his team to choose Rhode Island for the new headquarters, Raimondo spokesman Mike Raia quipped: "Is Tom Brady starting for the Patriots tonight?" Not to mention the tens of billions of indirect investment to come from so many new jobs and a massive real estate development.

Even if the Amazon project were to locate in Cincinnati, its magnitude would likely benefit northern Kentucky, with some employees buying homes on the Kentucky side of the river and increased traffic at the airport.

The company, which now employs 380,000 people, has already announced plans to create 130,000 through mid-2018 and expand its network of warehouses.

"Based on what downtown has now become as a major urban environment compared to what we were when Boeing was looking, there is no reason that we would not be at the top of Amazon's list as a headquarters location", Crawford said.

Cities hoping to catch the eye of the online giant have until October 19 to submit their proposals stating why Amazon should come to their community.

Amazon said it will not view HQ2 as a satellite office for the company. Apple is nearly done with its new spaceship headquarters, and next week, the company is even hosting an event in its new Steve Jobs Theater, where it will likely showcase its much-anticipated tenth anniversary iPhone.

The online retailer is now soliciting pitches from cities and states for what it calls "Amazon HQ2".

Asked if an Amazon headquarters could fit in Boston, Walsh said the city could make it happen. It said that it would prioritise bids from metropolitan areas with a population of at least a million people.

Amazon also recently closed its $13.7 billion deal to buy Whole Foods as it expands into the groceries market and brick-and-mortar stores.
