Williams, Kvitova to lock horns in US Open quarters

Venus Williams defeated Carla Suarez Navarro in round four at the US Open

Sevastova, trying to reach her first major semifinal, received treatment from a trainer late in the first set for a problem with her upper right leg, but she said that was not an issue the rest of the way.

Del Potro, who saved two match points to defeat sixth seed Dominic Thiem in a fourth-round thriller on Monday, has been plagued by injury ever since his moment in the NY spotlight eight years ago.

"Sometimes you have opportunities, and sometimes you take them and you don't; but it's not like you get opportunity after opportunity after opportunity in these sorts of matches", Williams said. "It definitely feels good that I have reached some milestone that I haven't before".

"It feels awesome and I didn't want to let you guys down".

It's the first all-American US Open women's semifinal since Serena Williams defeated Lindsay Davenport in 2002.

The magnitude of the matches are nothing new to either American.

Muguruza won't be contending in the final of this major, however, despite jumping out to a 4-1 lead in the opening set.

"It's great for American tennis".

"I think Venus is just our leader", Stephens said. She has in fact played in two this year, at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Sevastova admitted nerves got to her in the tie-breaker, saying, "It's normal". She's a great leader.

Trying to gather some momentum she came in NY without having big goals but she is only one match away from reaching the last four stages for the very first time.

"I had a cast and a peg leg, and I think those were probably-that was my toughest time", she said. I followed up and asked her to compare her frame of mind then to now.

The two-time Wimbledon champion fought off eight of the 11 break points she faced on the night.

But Williams dug deep, broke back thanks to a double fault and then held serve in a titanic ninth game.

Williams paid tribute to Kvitova.

For a player who had taken six weeks off in 2015 as she struggled for motivation, there were naturally questions about whether she would want to come back, even if she could.

Rafael Nadal of Spain returns a shot to Andrey Rublev of Russian Federation on day ten of the U.S. Open tennis tournament at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

After the quarterfinals win, Williams gave thanks to sister Serena Williams for her impact on the sport. Williams's backhand was especially effective, netting her three groundstroke winners and no unforced errors.

Rallies were brief as each woman was intent on taking the first strike.

A thick blanket of humidity left both ladies dripping sweat.

Yet, there was little evidence of these challenges as the two battled under the lights of the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Williams reiterated that she still has the love.

The 37-year-old American won 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7-2) in front of a rapturous night-session crowd in NY.

Kvitova admitted that her hand is not yet fully healed, but it's good enough for her to produce formidable performances. For the sixth time in as many meetings, the pair would go the distance.

The set took another plot twist in the fourth game. "I had a break in the third, but it wasn't about the breaks today".

Kvitova couldn't sustain it. Kvitova cranked out consecutive aces to level, 4-all.

Although the match had been close throughout, the tie-break was mostly one-way traffic.

Her surgery, the same day as the attack, had required 3 hours 45 minutes.

Venus Williams has moved into the U.S. Open semifinals for the first time in seven years.

By the way, how incredible is Venus Williams? "I don't think it's much different than any other match".
