The Difference Between IPL And BBL's Media Rights Deal Is Huge

The IPL which is broadcast around the world is hugely popular for its mix of sport and showbiz with a number of teams fronted by big Bollywood names

Star India's winning bid of Rs 16,347.50 crore for the five-year IPL media rights signifies some interesting trends.

The source also said the top brass in Star was not willing to budge from the IPL media rights since they were well aware what was at stake and thus they adopted this boom or bust strategy which paid dividends for them as they bagged the rights from Sony.

All these years, facebook has not spent a single rupee on content here in India and then they go and put Rs 3900 crore on IPL. Five-six years ago when we got into sports broadcasting our view was that India was a market, where as far as the popularity of sport is concerned, including cricket, only the surface of the earth has been scratched.

"India, cricket and IPL have changed dramatically since (the first IPL in) 2008, and this bid is a reflection of that", Uday Shankar, chairman of Star India, said.

Star India's consolidated bid was $2.5 billion or Rs 16,347 crore for the complete event.

"BCCI's annual earning is now expected to soar to Rs 4618 crores ($723.75 million) a year with this IPL media rights contributing Rs 3269 crores ($512.33 million)".

More than 24 companies competed for those rights - including Sony Pictures Network, OSM (Gulf DTH), African SuperSport, Econet, Yupp TV for the television rights; and Airtel, Reliance Jio, Times internet and Facebook for the digital rights. After the technical bids, the Walt Disney-owned American video supplier, BAMTech was disqualified because it did not fulfil certain criteria; the other 13 who made the final cut were Star India, SPN (India), BeIN (Qatar), the United Kingdom based Perform Group, Follow On, Yupp TV, OSN, Facebook, Airtel, Econet, Reliance Jio, Super Sport and Times Internet.

In terms of the marketability of the IPL and its popularity amongst the Indian masses, this is a historic deal for the BCCI. That cycle came to an end in 2017, thus facilitating the bidding process.

IPL is one of the biggest advertising properties in India on television, and more recently on digital. However, for the digital rights star and Facebook are the strong contenders in India.

"As you can see from our bidding numbers, we made a conscious call that we will bid for the global rights", Shankar said after the bids were disclosed by the BCCI. Thus, Star India will pay Rs 54.5 crore for 300 IPL matches being played between this period.

$8.47 million (INR 54.23 Cr) What the BCCI will earn per IPL game from the sale of media rights, over the next five years. "In every category, it was so competitive", Shankar added.
