Hip Hop Mourns The Death Of Steely Dan's Walter Becker

Steely Dan co-founder and guitarist Walter Becker dead at 67

His accomplice Donald Fagen, with he had created Steely Dan, had then explained that he was recuperating from an illness.

The band was in its heyday in the 1970s, although it retained a following.

So while the intentions behind keeping his band's music alive are admirable, Fagen should bear in mind there was and is only one Walter Becker who brought Steely Dan's music to life in the first place. "It seemed like the more complex the music we were playing, the less able we were to guarantee its consistency", Becker recalled in a 1996 interview with the Toronto Star.

Grammy scripter and erstwhile Rolling Stone writer David Wild said Becker "opened up my mind musically and made being a wiseass a fearless act of Pretzel Logic". "We want that ongoing flow, that lightness, that forward rush of jazz".

After five years, he performed informally with Fagen's group - the New York Rock and Soul Revue, which reignited their ties, resulting in reunion of the 1993 tour, in support of the comprehensive boxed set "Citizen Steely Dan".

Meanwhile, Steely Dan fans have been posting their tributes on social media.

Steely Dan had been admitted in 2001 into the Rock and roll Hall of Fame, a sort of Pantheon of rock. The band debuted in 1972 with the LP "Can't Buy a Thrill".

To quote from their song "Black Friday", "When Black Friday comes, I'll collect everything I'm owed, and before my friends find out, I'll be on the road". Slash posted a photo of Mr. Becker on Instagram, writing "RIP #WalterBecker".

In its heyday in the 1970's, the band scored hits with "Reelin' in the Years", "Do It Again", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" and "Deacon Blues". The contrast between the gleaming surfaces of Steely Dan's records and the awful flaws exposed by their lyrics sounds less, these days, like a delicious irony, and more like a chronic poignancy. It was the essence of a classic partnership, and in the pop world, the Steely Dan alliance was as championed as they came. Of course, Becker, wasn't an obvious presence on the songs themselves. In a calm manner, he proclaims that "there's a star in the book of liars by your name", bitterness and profound sadness permeating through his voice.

"I have played no band more often or enjoyed any music more than Steely Dan". Becker and Fagen formed a band in college that included Chevy Chase on drums. They have spent the last two decades touring.

He wrote: "Really sad to hear Walter Becker has passed". They were indeed "two against nature" in that the duo fearlessly took on ambitious projects, dissolving the boundaries between rock and jazz, writing absurdist lyrics, and defying conventions of the typical length and construction of a Top 40 track.
