Still, not playing at her best, Sharapova held in the opening game of the second.

The USTA didn't immediately respond to CNN's request for an explanation of the U.S. Open's court scheduling decisions.

She didn't have it all her own way in the first set against her 18-year-old opponent, playing in the third round for the first time, though.

"I think with the way that I played Monday night, I don't think there are any more questions", she said when asked whether her spot in the tournament was justified.

'When you look on Center Court, I understand completely the business side of things, but someone who comes back from a drugs sentence - performance enhancing drugs - and all of a sudden gets to play every single match on Center Court, I think that's a questionable thing to do.

Evgeniya Rodina, ranked 89th, played both her matches there.

Also going through to the last 32 was 2009 champion Juan Martín Del Potro, the 24th seeded Argentine, who saw off Spanish qualifier Adrian Menendez-Maceiras 6-2, 6-3, 7-6 (7/3).

"In the second set, I felt physically fresh and I used that as confidence. It's huge", Shapovalov said.

It was a gutsy display by Kenin who gave Sharapova a run for her money, but her inexperience showed as she consistently judged returns poorly and Sharapova eventually got the better of her in just shy of an hour and three quarters.

"It was quite a lot of fun out there - I feel quite warmed up by now", said Australian Open and Wimbledon champion Federer, who fired 63 winners and 68 unforced errors.

Two-time Wimbledon Champion Petra Kvitova advanced 6-0, 6-4 over 18th-seeded Caroline Garcia. The US Open, however, awarded her a wild card into the season's final Grand Slam. ► Germany's Mischa Zverev stunned the American crowd with a 6-4 6-3 7-6 (5) victory over John Isner.
