Eagles take one step closer to Russian Federation, thrash Cameroon in Uyo

Mikel Moses Star As Super Eagles Destroy Cameroon

He wrote, "I join millions of football-loving Nigerians in applauding our Super Eagles for their skilful and entertaining display against Cameroon".

Cameroon shorned the Eagles of the ball in the early exchanges and stand in goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa had to be on top of his game to save a header from defender Ngadeu.

Odion Ighalo opened the scoring for the Eagles before Mikel made it 2-0 close to the end of the first half. Ighalo dis well to dummy the ball for Mikel to score.

The game, which saw Nigerian stars shine so bright at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Friday evening, is Eagles' third consecutive win in the qualifying series.

However, the Chelsea forward's failure to pick out Ighalo went unpunished, as moments later, Mikel had added Nigeria's second when he fired home after Moses's corner wasn't cleared by the visitors.

The Cameroonians came out blazing in the second half, substitute Choupo-Moting leading the charge.

Kelechi Iheanacho came off the bench to nod in the fourth in the 76th minute to complete the comprehensive trouncing of the African champions.

Any hopes Cameroon had of clawing their way back into the contest were ended in the 55th minute when the impressive Moses - so often Nigeria's saviour during some of their biggest matches over the last four years - beat Ondoa after a counter attack.

Mr Buhari in a statement urged the players to sustain the momentum as they approach the crucial second leg of the tie in Yaounde, on Monday.
