Tributes to 'truly extraordinary' Diana 20 years after auto crash death

Tom Sancton, Time magazine Paris bureau chief at the time, co-author of the book "Death of a Princess", remembered: "Anyone who is old enough to remember that night and day will forever be marked by it in some way".

Graham Smith, the CEO of Republic which wants the monarchy abolished, told Julia Hartley-Brewer: "In the long term I think [Diana's death has] actually probably put [the Royal Family] in a very risky place, because they're sort of now relying on sort of the celebrity game".

During the interview, Gourmelon said he remembers trying to calm down Diana's bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, who was sitting in the front seat of the auto during the accident.

Across Britain, people are marking the 20th anniversary of the Paris vehicle crash which claimed the life of Princess Diana.

Diana and her lover Dodi Fayed were both killed in the crash along with their driver Henri Paul, but her bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones, the only one of the quartet wearing a seatbelt, survived.
