"Humble" is also nominated for the Best Choreography award, which we can't imagine going to anyone but Kanye West for "Fade", which Teyana Taylor murdered with her almost four-minute badass dance scene. "It's ridiculous in a lot of ways, high-school gossip amplified to feed the public's hunger for drama", the Guardian's Maura Johnston wrote. The whole thing will be shown live on MTV in two day's time.

Leading the pack of nominees is Kendrick Lamar, up for eight awards including artist and video of the year, plus best cinematography, art direction and visual effects.

A number of big names will be taking to the stage to perform this year. She'll also be performing during the show. This year's lineup is an impressive power-punch of talent, with performances by Kendrick Lamar, Fifth Harmony, Miley Cyrus, Lorde, The Weeknd, Ed Sheeran, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Shawn Mendes and a special collaboration between DNCE and Rod Stewart. They've recently ditched separating categories by gender at both the Movie & TV Awards and now the VMAs, and there are now categories devoted to achievements in activism. MTV has also added a new category this year - best fight against the system - for videos advocating for social justice. The music video "Stand Up / Stand N Rock #NoDAPL" was recorded by Taboo of Black Eyed Peas and "Magnificent Seven" Native American artists from different tribes, including Zack "Doc" Battiest, Spencer Battiest, Emcee One, Drezus, PJ Vegas, SupaMan, Natalia Aka "My Verse".

Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Paul Haverstick confirmed the news to CNN, saying: "MTV has requested service member participation for this year's VMAs".

The US president caused outrage and offence in July when he abruptly tweeted that transgender people could no longer serve in the military. Department of Defense officials are reviewing the request.

The 2017 "VMAs" will be broadcast live from the "Fabulous" Forum in Inglewood, California on Sunday, August 27th at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT.
