Barack Obama's Charlottesville Tweet Is One Of The Most Liked In History

Barack Obama quoted Nelson Mandela to help preach a message of racial tolerance

Former President Obama's tweet in the wake of the violent clashes in Charlottesville, Va.is one of the most popular tweets of all time.

By Tuesday, the tweet had more than 2.5 million likes, unseating Ellen DeGeneres' celebrity-studded selfie from the 2014 Academy Awards as the second most-liked tweet of all time.

Barack Obama then published a trio of tweets, quoting late South African President Nelson Mandela. "People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love", he tweeted.

"- Barack Obama (@BarackObama) August 13, 2017".For love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite".

Currently, the record-holder is a tweet from pop star Ariana Grande telling fans that she was "broken" after a bombing of her concert in Manchester killed at least 22 people, including some children. In total, all three tweets accrued over four million likes and 1.5-million retweets.

Then, on Monday afternoon - two days after the fact - Trump gave an impromptu announcement to the press, while gazing deeply into his teleprompter. He was widely criticized for blaming the situation on "many sides" rather than specifically condemning neo-Nazis and white supremacists. The most retweeted tweet of all time remains an American teenager's attempt to get free chicken nuggets from fast food chain Wendy's.

Meanwhile, none of President Trump's tweets since Saturday have more than a few hundred thousand likes.

The violent rally comprised of neo-Nazis, KKK members, and white supremacists led to the death of counter-protester Heather Heyer, who was run over by a vehicle during the event.

Others blamed the Charlottesville violence on Obama.
