Google Cancels Diversity Town Hall Over Concerns for Employee Safety

Over 60 women are considering suing Google over claims of sexism and low pay

According to The Wall Street Journal, Google has abruptly canceled a company-wide meeting, scheduled for Thursday afternoon, that was meant to address employee questions about the company's diversity policies.

Sundar Pichai the CEO of Google has been forced to cancel an internal town hall meeting over a gender dispute rocking the tech company.

Pichai said that he has met with many people at Google about the controversy, with the vast majority supporting the decision to fire the author of the manifesto.

"We had hoped to have a frank, open discussion today as we always do to bring us together and move forward", wrote Google Chief Executive Sundar Pichai in an email.

In an email to employees, Pichai said some questions that had been pre-submitted via Google's moderating software "appeared externally this afternoon and on some websites Googlers are now being named personally".

As Pichai wrote in the email, he has received anxious messages from several "Googlers" expressing concern for their well-being, according to the New York Times. She wrote, in response to the engineer's memo, that "diversity and inclusion are a fundamental part of our values and the culture", and then rebuked the statement, telling employees that she wouldn't link to the letter because everyone disagrees with its contents.

He also argued that Google's culture was biased against people with politically conservative views, and questioned its diversity training.

The lack of gender and racial diversity within the technology industry is a long-term issue, with the sector traditionally viewed as a bastion of educated caucasian men, something that Google and other have been attempting to turn around, but the search company had been handed a double-edged sword with Damore.

"You should absolutely be able to speak up".

"I would've fired him just for thinking anyone would want to read a 10-page memo in the first place", Huppke writes. The company also faces a Labor Department investigation for allegedly paying women less than men. Other concerns included how to make it clear that Google did not have lower standards for hiring women and minorities, and what it could do to make political conservatives feel more welcome. Google, on the other hand, has denied all the allegations made against the company and commented that a sample of 60 employees can not make strong allegations against the company which is employing thousands of employees in different locations. Damore in his memo questioned some of Google's hiring practices and advocated that there needs to be more acceptance of different types of ideologies at Google.
