Yankees Grab Frazier, Kahnle, Robertson From White Sox

It has been close to a week since the White Sox dealt ace pitcher (courtesy of the Chicago Sun-Times) Jose Quintana to the Chicago Cubs.

The New York Yankees had two major needs heading into the second half of the MLB season: a corner infielder and more pitching.

For the New Yor Yankees, this is a big upgrade in the bullpen and at first base. He spent the first seven seasons of his career in the Bronx, and is in the middle of a fantastic season.

New York, probably not coincidentally, learned this week that Bird will need ankle surgery and might miss the rest of the season.

Rutherford is ranked the No. 30 overall prospect in baseball per MLB.com.

NY will send left-hander Jordan Montgomery (6-4, 3.78 ERA) to the mound on Wednesday seeking its first series win since beating the Orioles on June 11. Now they have more. He throws 100 miles per hour and has become a decent reliever over the past two seasons with the White Sox including a 2.50 ERA (171 ERA+) a 15.0 K/9 and 1.8 BB/9 in 36 innings. Polo made his Double-A debut just a couple of weeks ago and is batting.382 with a.460 OBP through 14 games. The big get, however, is Kahlne. He's walking only 1.8 per nine innings and his strikeout to walk ratio is 8.57.

With the Chicago White Sox dealing Frazier to the New York Yankees it means two things.

Of course, the Yankees didn't get these players for nothing.

The Yankees gave up reliever Tyler Clippard and three prospects: the left-handed pitcher Ian Clarkin, and outfielders Blake Rutherford and Tito Polo.

Clarkin is a supplemental first-round pick from 2013, a LHP with a fastball in the mid-90s and an above average slider, cutter and changeup, but who has dealt with injuries over the last few years. The Yankees aren't a flawless team and the starting rotation still has question marks.

The 30th ranked prospect in all of baseball by MLB.com, Rutherford adds to a growing White Sox farm system that's been stocked with talent since the team chose to go the rebuilding route. Robertson's salary was always going to be a problem in netting top-notch prospects.

Kahnle's White Sox teammates (unsurprisingly) defended the right-hander after the fact, so it's essentially Hawkins' word against Kahnle's. With several Major League Baseball teams jockeying for position in the standings, the White Sox are one of the few ball clubs looking to sell off talent.

The White Sox are reportedly calling up former top Red Sox prospect Yoan Moncada, who was traded for Chris Sale in the offseason, after the Frazier trade cleared up the third base spot on the roster. "Then, in the blink of an eye, they're part of another team".

In essence, the Yanks acquired three players that will help them immediately and didn't have to surrender Gleyber Torres. their top prospect. or Clint Frazier, Jorge Matteo, Justus Sheffield, Chance Adams or anybody of that nature.
