This woman lost 27 contacts in just one eye

Macro shot of surprised or scared human eye

Or, at least, I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to casually keep 27 contact lenses in your eye socket.

The woman is wearing monthly lenses for over 35 years, says the doctor in a short report published in the medical journal BMJ.

She said she was unaware that the lenses were missing.

A "routine" cataract surgery uncovered almost 30 contact lenses stuck together in two separate chunks in a 67-year-old British woman's eye.

Initially, the eye specialists found a mass of 17 lenses stuck together by mucus. The woman also reported that she had not been regularly seeing an optometrist. She found another 10 lenses on a second inspection. All the contact lenses were stuck together.

The lenses, which were found by a group of surgeons including trainee ophthalmologist Rupal Morjaria, were described as a "bluish mass" in her eye.

A report in the British Medical Journal detailed how the woman "had no previous ocular complaints" prior to the surgery.

"None of us have ever seen this before". The patient was experiencing discomfort, and she thought it was probably because of her old age or probably dry eyes.

Morjaria doesn't know whether the woman had any appointments with an optometrist before the clump was discovered, but she doesn't think she would have had regular checkups. Oh, and this lady had no idea she had that many lenses in her damn eyeball.

The case, which occurred in November past year, was first reported in The BMJ, but has been made public because clinicians involved didn't previously believe that having so many lenses lost in the eye could be possible.

She was later treated with antibiotics and had a routine cataract surgery on a later date.

The patient, who has not been named, had her cataract surgery postponed following the discovery.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology said Keratitis is the most common infection from wearing contact lenses, when the cornea - the clear, front window of the eye - becomes infected.
