Disney criticised for Jasmine casting in new Aladdin

Get to know'Aladdin stars Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott

Tapped to play the genie, Will Smith steps into the daunting void left by Robin Williams, who voiced the character in the original animated film.

This comes after Disney had announced facing difficulty in finding a person to take on the role of Aladdin, asking people to offer their online suggestions for the flawless candidate.

Scott on the other hand was a star in the latest Power Rangers movie and also had a role in movies like The Martian, Terra Nova, and Disney movie Lemonade Mouth. Guy Ritchie was previously announced as director.

Insisting she is "over it", the singer, 24, appeared to make reference to missing out on the opportunity to play the Disney princess. One fan pointed out that Scott was white and Indian while Jasmine was black and Middle Eastern, hence, Scott was no Jasmine at all. Now the question on everybody's lips is: just who is Mena Massoud?

Mena, a relative newcomer, will play the role of Aladdin while Naomi is set to star as Jasmine. The Coptic Egyptian-Canadian actor is recognized for his roles in television series Open Heart and Saving Hope. Scott, who will portray Princess Jasmine, is born to a British actor and an Indian mother. The movie will draw inspiration from the 1992 animated film. According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, filming for the live-action movie will start in August in London. Many names including Dev Patel, Riz Ahmed, Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone were bandied about on social media in connection with the cast.
