In their first meeting at a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in May, 39-year- old Macron crunched Trump's knuckles in a show of power he said was deliberate to underline how he wouldn't be intimidated in their talks.

Handshake aficionado and President of the United States Donald Trump on Friday sustained his art of the grip for a duration never before seen on the worldwide stage.

Macron and Trump exchanged a similarly odd shake during the G20 summit, where the French President also pushed through several world leaders to stand next to the USA commander-in-chief during a photo opportunity. Looking at Macron, Trump added: "You better do a good job, please".

Mr Trump returned the kindness of Mr Macron in a statement released as Air Force One flew back to the US.

The two leaders shared a passionate and lengthy handshake at the end of President Trump's two-day state visit to France.

US First Lady Melania Trump toured Notre Dame cathedral with her French counterpart Brigitte Macron on Thursday, stopping to pray before a statue of the Virgin Mary.

Macron invited Trump to visit Paris for the national celebration in June.

Mr Trump had said: "The friendship between our two nations - and ourselves, I might add - is unbreakable".

A total of 3,700 members of the military paraded along the Champs Elysees in Paris for the occasion.

"My handshake with him, it's not innocent", Macron said.

Macron said there was still "disagreement" on climate and no breakthrough on commerce, but he said that he and Trump saw eye to eye on the importance of "fair, free trade".

It is not the first time The Donald has commented on the physical appearance of a woman at what should be a serious meeting.

Bastille Day commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789 - the start of the French Revolution and a turning point in world history.

The leaders and their wives, Melania and Brigitte, had enjoyed a glittering Michelin-starred "dinner between friends" up the Eiffel Tower - beef with truffle sauce and warm strawberry and yogurt sorbet.
