Yankees option eliminated as Cubs splash for Jose Quintana

Chicago Cubs trade for Jose Quintana: Chicago White Sox get top prospects Eloy Jimenez, Dylan Cease

In 1973 the Cubs traded nine-time All-Star Ron Santo to the White Sox for a total of four players, including future Cy Young victor and current White Sox broadcaster Steve Stone.

As the season slips away from them, the Chicago White Sox have capitalized on the opportunity to add more talent to their farm system by trading All-Star Jose Quintana to the Chicago Cubs.

The Cubs' need for another quality arm in the rotation has been apparent all season after their off-season acquisitions of Brett Anderson and Eddie Butler hadn't panned out as planned (although Butler hasn't been bad like Anderson was).

Rather that wait on teams such as Pittsburgh (Gerrit Cole), Toronto (Marcus Stroman) or Detroit (Justin Verlander) to decide whether they will be buyers or sellers this month, the Cubs jumped at the chance to strike a deal with a team that harbored no illusions of contending.

The Chicago Cubs, refusing to sit back and savor last year's World Series championship, opened the second half by jump-starting the trade deadline Thursday with a deal that stunned the baseball industry.

Quintana will slot in atop the top of the Cubs' starting rotation with the veteran Jon Lester. The Cubs got a cost-controlled starter with an All-Star track record without touching their big-league roster while the White Sox got a big prospect package.

Jimenez made headlines last month after he hit part of a light tower during the High-A home run derby, and was almost the MVP of the 2016 All-Star Futures game as he wowed fans and scouts both on offense and defense.

Rose, 22, is batting.227 (53-for-233) with 15 doubles, 14 home runs and 38 RBI in 65 games with Myrtle Beach this season.

Cease has been a dominant pitcher since making his minor league debut, and though most of his work has come as a starter he is only averaging about 3.1 innings pitched per outing.

Jose Quintana, during his last start for the White Sox on July 8, heads to the other side of Chicago.

#WhiteSox have acquired OF Eloy Jiménez, RHP Dylan Cease, 1B Matt Rose & INF Bryant Flete from the Cubs in exchange for LHP José Quintana. Cease is yet another power arm who consistently hits the upper 90-mph mark, and he joins a stable of prospects such as Michael Kopech and Lucas Giolito who give the White Sox a decent chance to develop a dominant rotation. They White Sox have netted 11 prospects in return in those deals, five of which are rated among MLB.com's 70 best.
