President Trump says son's Russia meeting was 'standard campaign practice'

Donald Trump Jr. left with Sean Hannity on Tuesday

The United States Senate Judiciary committee wrote a letter to Donald Trump Jr. on Thursday, asking him to testify before the committee, Chairman Chuck Grassley told CNN on Thursday.

Grassley said the committee would call Manafort to testify to learn why he didn't file as a foreign agent before becoming involved in the USA presidential campaign.

The New York Times has reported during the past several days the meeting was arranged on the premise of passing damaging information about Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton from the Russian government to top members of the Trump campaign.

Veselnitskaya herself denied any connection to the Kremlin, said she did not request a meeting with Trump Jr. during the 2016 presidential campaign, and noted that she has no information damaging Clinton.

Manafort ran Trump's campaign from March to August of 2016 before resigning amid news reports that he received illegal payments for lobbying work in the Ukraine, where he worked for a prime minister who had close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The president says the Russian national involved wasn't a government lawyer.

The panel is investigating Russian meddling in the US election.

Multiple Congressional committees as well as Special Counsel Robert Mueller are investigating potential collusion between the Russian government and the Trump campaign.

Manafort disclosed the meeting in a package of information he provided to the Senate and House intelligence committees, who have been investigating potential coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign, as is Robert Mueller, the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director appointed by the Justice Department as the special counsel.

CLARIFICATION: An earlier version of this story misstated whom Donald Trump Jr. had emailed.

The senator from the U.S. state of Iowa added that if necessary, he will subpoena Manafort.

"I think many people would have held that meeting", Trump told Reuters.

Trump says the woman is a private attorney who has "roamed the hallways" of the U.S. Congress.

A further three pages of emails show that arrangements were then made between the President's son and the contact, public relations specialist Rob Goldstone, to meet on June 9, 2016. Dianne Feinstein, had also called on Donald Trump Jr.to testify and had discussed possible subpoenas with Grassley.

Investigations into possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign have shadowed the White House for months.
