N leadership rejects JIT report as 'garbage'

JIT terms Sharif family’s story about Gulf Steel Mills unauthentic

The court action came after the head of the investigation team told judges the paper's report was false, according to several lawyers who were present at Monday's court session.

Prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his family accused of illegally profiting from his position as PM during the 1990s.

The top leadership of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) made it clear that the ruling party would not accept the findings of the JIT if the statements of a former Qatari prime minister Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani were not made part of the report.

The apex court fixed July 10 as the day for receiving the report from the JIT.

The report suggested the National Accountability Bureau, the country's main anti-corruption watchdog, should open a "reference" or case against Sharif and his three children under the provisions of the National Accountability Bureau Ordinance of 1999.

The report also alleged there was "irregular movement of huge amounts in shape of loans and gifts" from companies based in Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates to Sharif's family and Pakistan-based companies.

The case hinges on two parallel money trails for the Park Lane apartments: one based on the Rehman Malik investigation, and the other provided by Hussain Nawaz to the apex court.

The investigators have recommended that a case be filed against Sharif in the a National Accountability Court, after concluding that there were "significant gap [s]" in Sharif's family's ability to account for their assets. After accepting the JIT report, the Highest Court of Pakistan has ordered a FIR against Zafar Hijazi, for meddling records of the business of Sharif family.

Hearing the plea of Hussain Nawaz regarding formation of a judicial commission to probe leaking of his photograph, taken during his appearance before the JIT, the bench observed that the government could form a commission on the issue, if it deemed so.

He claimed that JIT members were biased, which was against the principles of justice. Besides his three children, the panel questioned his daughter Maryam's husband Muhammad Safdar Awan, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, who is related to the Prime Minister's family through marriage.
