Trump's Son, Son-in-Law Met Russian Lawyer in 2016 to Discuss Adoption Program

President Trump's eldest son, his son-in-law and former campaign chairman Paul Manafort met at Trump Tower with a Kremlin-connected lawyer last June, it was revealed on Saturday.

The president's legal team said Saturday they believe the entire meeting may have been part of a larger election-year opposition effort aimed at creating the appearance of improper connections between Trump family members and Russian Federation that also included a now-discredited intelligence dossier produced by a former British intelligence agent named Christopher Steele who worked for a US political firm known as Fusion GPS.

To be fair to Trump Jr's account of the meeting being about adoption, the Kremlin lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya is know to be against the Magnitsky Act, a USA law that blacklisted human rights abusers that murdered another Russian lawyer named Sergei Magnitsky.

Mr Trump Jr said in a statement that they discussed a suspended programme for Americans to adopt Russian children.

He described it as a "short introductory meeting" during which the three discussed a disbanded program that used to allow US citizens to adopt Russian children.

'I asked Jared and Paul to stop by.

The New York Times said Ms Veselnitskaya was known for her attempts to undermine sanctions against Russian human rights abusers.

A spokesman for the President's legal team told CNN the meeting could have been an effort to create an appearance of inappropriate connections between Trump family members and Russian Federation.

His lawyer Jamie Gorelick said: "He has since submitted this information, including that during the campaign and transition, he had over 100 calls or meetings with representatives of more than 20 countries, most of which were during transition".

The Magnitsky Act imposed visa bans and asset freezes on Russian officials linked to the 2009 death in prison of Sergei Magnitsky, a 37-year-old Russian whistleblower.

"Putin & I discussed forming an impenetrable Cyber Security unit so that election hacking, & many other negative things, will be guarded", Mr. Trump said Sunday on Twitter.

"These developments raise serious issues as to exactly who authorized and participated in any effort by Russian nationals to influence our election in any manner", Corallo said.

Kushner is known to have held meetings with the Russian ambassador to the United States and a banker from Moscow in December, according to The Washington Post.

"I was asked to attend the meeting by an acquaintance, but was not told the name of the person I would be meeting with beforehand", Trump Jr. said.

The newspaper reported on Saturday, citing unnamed sources, that Mr Manafort disclosed the meeting to congressional investigators questioning his foreign contacts. Trump and other Republicans have claimed the alleged meddling did not affect the election's outcome.

But Trump's legal team is raising questions about the June 9, 2016, conclave and is suggesting that the lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, misrepresented herself. The law so enraged Mr. Putin that he retaliated by halting American adoptions of Russian children.

Comey said it should be special counsel Robert Mueller's task to determine whether Trump had obstructed justice, and therefore, had opened himself up to possible impeachment proceedings, keeping the allegations on Russian Federation in mind.
