The 31-year-old crashed on the damp descent of the Col de la Biche, just under halfway through the mountainous 181.5km stage from Nantua to Chambery.

Briton Geraint Thomas has abandoned the Tour de France after sustaining a suspected broken collarbone following a crash in a high-speed descent during the ninth stage on Sunday.

After numerous attacks including from Aru and Porte, Froome dropped the other GC rivals, with Nairo Quintana (Movistar) and Aru unable to stay with the three-time Tour de France victor.

Uran took victory in a photo finish ahead of Warren Barguil, one final twist of drama on a day that will live long in Tour history.

And the battle for the stage win came down to a slow-motion sprint between an exhausted group, containing Chris Froome in the yellow jersey.

"Richie (Porte) was quite instrumental in slowing that group down, saying this is not the time to attack the leader of the race, so thanks to Richie and I hope he makes a speedy recovery". He lay motionless on the road for some time being attended to by medics before being taken to hospital, although organisers said he was conscious and speaking.

Porte crashed on the descent from the Mont du Chat, the last of the day's big climbs, as he slid off the inside of corner and was violently flung across the road, with Quick Step Floors rider Dan Martin unable to avoid him.

Froome will be relieved to have safely completed a stage filled with hazards, but the loss of Thomas could be hugely significant with Team Sky left weakened.

Italian Fabio Aru replaced Thomas in second place going into Monday's first rest day.

Martin lost more than a minute, as did Movistar's Nairo Quintana, three times a runner-up in the race, while former victor Alberto Contador of Trek Segafredo seems to be out of contention after losing over four minutes.
