Canada gives $10M, apology to former Guantanamo prisoner

Mr. Khadr was captured in Afghanistan at the age of 15 in 2002, following a shootout with US troops where he was badly wounded - blinded by shrapnel in one eye and with fist-sized exit wounds in his shoulder and chest.

After almost eight years in Guantanamo, Mr. Khadr has got in 2010 for his extradition to Canada from a confession made with the United States.

Khadr's lawyers filed a $20 million lawsuit against the Canadian government for wrongful imprisonment, arguing that the government did not protect its own citizen and worked with the U.S.to abuse Khadr in violation of global law. The Pentagon charged Khadr with "murder in violation of the laws of war", for the death of Delta Force soldier Sgt. Christopher Speer, who was fatally wounded in the July 2002 firefight.

In 2010, he pled guilty to multiple charges, including murder, and received an eight year sentence.

Those who see him as a terribly abused "child soldier" called the apparent settlement long overdue.

His supporters accused the Canadian government - particularly the previous Conservative government under then prime minister Stephen Harper - for failing to protect him.

The government apology ends what has been a legal saga for Khadr in Canada for almost 15 years.

The youngest and last Western detainee held at the infamous American prison in Cuba was finally returned to Canada in 2012 and sent to a maximum-security prison.

Khadr's lawyers took the federal government to court Three times over his constitutional rights, and three times the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in favour of Khadr, writing in an unanimous 2010 decision that the participation of Canadian officials in Khadr's Guantanamo interrogations "offends the most basic Canadian standards about the treatment of detained youth suspects".

When asked about it Tuesday during a visit to Ireland in the upstream of the G-20, Justin Trudeau has declared that the "judicial process" lasted "for several years" and that he expected an early conclusion.

Scott Bardsley, a spokesman for Canada's public safety minister, also confirmed there is an ongoing court process in the case. "Accordingly, the Government is not in a position to provide any comment one way or another", Bardsley said in an email.

Speer's widow Tabitha Speer and retired American sergeant Layne Morris, who was blinded by a grenade at the Afghan compound, won a default US$134.2 million in damages against Khadr in Utah in 2015. A US judge granted $134.2 million in damages in 2015, but the plaintiffs said then that there was little chance they would collect any of the money from Khadr because he lives in Canada.

His lawyers argued that he had been co-opted into fighting for al-Qaeda by his father, Ahmed Said Khadr, who was friendly with Osama Bin Laden.

After his 2015 release from prison in Alberta, Omar Khadr apologized to the families of the victims. He said he rejected violent jihad and wanted a fresh start. He now resides in an apartment in Edmonton, Alberta.
