Senate passes Russia sanctions bill, pushing back against Trump

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Iran’s supreme leader delivering a speech during a meeting in Tehran Sept. 9 2015

"If we can not make some progress, and I have told others in the Senate, I have had conversations with them, I may very well be coming to you and saying the time has come now to do this in order to motivate some movement on their part".

Both sides of the aisle came together in the Senate on Thursday to overwhelmingly pass legislation that puts new sanctions on Russian Federation while limiting President Trump's ability to remove them, the Hill reports. That measure reflected Republican complaints that Obama had overstepped the power of the presidency and needed to be checked by Congress. Republicans and Democrats have said they doubt Trump would veto the bill. "Pretty good rate of return".

The new Iran restrictions, which impose mandatory sanctions on people involved with the Islamic republic's ballistic missile program and those that transact with them.

Obama's former secretary of state, John Kerry, had raised that prospect on the eve of the Foreign Relations Committee's vote on the bill last month.

"Today the Senate has finally confronted Russian Federation for interfering in our elections". Rouhani is a political moderate who defeated a hard-line opponent.

Engel was unimpressed."The only thing that Russian Federation understands is tough talk and if they think we are somehow willing to relax the sanctions on them before they've complied with the Minsk framework and left Crimea, then I think it will just encourage Putin to continue his bullying and who knows where he will strike next".

In November, Iranian dictator Ali Khamenei threatened USA leaders that his country would react if sanctions were passed against his terrorist regime. The Russia provisions, authored by Corker, Cardin and banking committee chairman Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) and ranking member Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), maintain and substantially expand sanctions against the government of Russia in response to the violation of the territorial integrity of the Ukraine and Crimea, its brazen cyber-attacks and interference in elections, and its continuing aggression in Syria.

Yet Trump hasn't sought to rebuke Moscow.

The legislation would impose new sanctions against "corrupt Russian actors", "those involved in serious human rights abuses", Russians providing arms to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime or those engaged in cyberattacks on behalf of the government. It also places additional sanctions on specific industries, including the country's mining, shipping and railway industry.

According to Slutsky, these actions show the high degree of anti-Russian "hysteria" still present in the United States.

It remained unknown whether Trump, who had been seeking rapprochement with Russian Federation for months, would sign the bill into law.

The penalties have been criticised by Austria and Germany for promoting United States economic interests.
