Larson outlasts Elliott at Michigan again

Kyle Larson passed Kyle Busch to take the lead with 15 laps remaining, then withstood a sequence of late restarts to win the FireKeepers Casino 400 Sunday at Michigan International Speedway.

Clint Bowyer matched his best qualifying effort of the season and will start third on Sunday.

There is no other non-restrictor plate track in NASCAR that is as fast as Michigan International Speedway. "They were pretty fast leading up to MI last year, but I feel like since MI when we got that win we have just continued to make them better and had a great offseason - and started the year off really good". Larson has now won the past two races at MIS; he won last August for his first career Cup win.

Larson heads to his home track next week at Sonoma Raceway, in which he has a best finish of 12th in three starts. "This is our second Cup win of the year, but we've had six second-place finishes", Larson said.

Larson took over the series points lead over Martin Truex Jr., who finished sixth.

Justin Allgaier pulled a theft on his JR Motorsports teammate Elliott Sadler in last Saturday's NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Pocono.

The hottest drivers in the series are those without wins as Kevin Harvick comes in #1 with five Top 10 finishes in his last six races and Kyle Busch has four. However, through a rash of cautions toward the end of the event, the No. 42 restarted underneath Kyle Busch with 15 laps to go, but had to keep the lead through two final restarts for separate incidents.

"The track has probably widened out since previous year", Dillon said. His margin of victory over Elliott was 0.993 seconds. Larson will start from the pole again Sunday, and the current king of the two-mile tracks is capable of delivering an equally dominant performance and finishing as the top scorer. Unless rain becomes an issue, Sunday promises to see a race run under hot, sticky, and sunny conditions, with the potential of temperatures in the mid-to-high 80s, maybe even reaching into the low 90s. Ten different drivers have won Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series races this season.

Johnson qualified 13th, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. earned the 17th starting spot. They will both have a great shot at leading 40+ laps and winning the race and both have shown top speed in practices. He has the most upside of any driver in this format, and if he can just flirt with a Top 20 finish, he can approach 40 fantasy points. Paul Menard, Ty Dillon, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Brad Keselowski and Ryan Sieg will all gain extra seat time.
