Trump 'confirms' he's under probe

Accusations of obstruction of justice arose last month when Donald Trump fired FBI director James Comey

"The Department of Justice has a long-established policy to neither confirm nor deny such allegations", Rosenstein said in his statement.

President Donald Trump and I rarely agree.

Now the probe has expanded to include investigating whether Trump attempted to obstruct justice when he fired Comey.

Democrats and Republicans alike decried President Trump's tweet about the Russian Federation investigation on Capitol Hill Friday. "You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!". Former FBI head Robert Mueller was appointed as special counsel a day after a report stemming from the notes was published. Trump confirmed on his Twitter account that an investigation is being conducted against him for firing former FBI Director James Comey, most likely under the suspicion that this was an obstruction of justice. Rosenstein also appointed Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate all things Trump and Russian Federation.

The top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee on June 16 called on Congress to "unite to stop" Trump if he tries to fire Rosenstein or Mueller.

Trump later told NBC's Lester Holt he had planned to fire Comey regardless of what recommendation he received from Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who has recused himself from the Russian Federation investigation. "That's undemocratic on its face and a blatant violation of the president's oath of office".

Aides have counseled the president to stay off Twitter and focus on other aspects of his job.

The probe by special counsel Robert Mueller, a former FBI chief, "marks a major turning point in the almost year-old FBI investigation, which until recently focused on Russian meddling during the presidential campaign and on whether there was any coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin", The Washington Post had reported.

"Americans should be skeptical about anonymous allegations", Rosenstein said. Trump had viewed Sessions' recusal as unnecessary, even though Justice Department regulations made it nearly impossible to avoid.

The department would not comment on the record on whether Trump, who has repeatedly complained about leaks on the case, requested the statement.

"He's driving this", the White House official said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss West Wing internal deliberations.

Theoretically, Trump could be saying that Mueller told him to fire Comey, though that makes little sense since Mueller was not part of his administration.

Rosenstein took over the investigation after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself because he was a Trump campaign surrogate.

Later, that position was contradicted by the President himself, in an interview with NBC's Lester Holt, when he stated that he had made up his mind to fire Comey before he had even seen the Rosenstein memo. In a series of tweets on Friday morning the president confirmed that he was being investigated for firing James Comey on May 9th. The transition, a nonprofit structurally separate from the Trump campaign, continues to operate with a small staff.

Trump also attacked the media Friday morning.

Pence had taken over the transition team from New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.
