Inglewood City Council OKs negotiations for new Clippers arena

Fresh off the team's second National Basketball Association title in two seasons, Golden State special consultant and former National Basketball Association star Jerry West is leaving the Warriors to try and have the same effect on the Los Angeles Clippers.

On the eve of their championship parade, the Golden State Warriors are losing executive Jerry West, according to multiple sources. A Hall of Famer on the court, West won an NBA Championship in 1972 with the Lakers.

West told ESPN that it was a hard decision but it was something he wanted to do.

Since West joined the Warriors after the 2010-11 season, the Warriors have gone 328-158, including winning the NBA Finals twice.

In a report by Sports Illustrated's Jack McCallum on Wednesday (Thursday, Manila time), the 79-year-old West made his decision in the last couple of weeks to end his six-year stay with the Warriors as adviser and take on a new challenge with the Clippers. He joined Golden State in May 2011 and, after the team was 23-43 in the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season, the team reached the playoffs in the next five seasons.

During his storied career as an National Basketball Association executive, "The Logo" served as the general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers between 1982 and 2000 before taking his talents to the Memphis Grizzlies in 2002. I didn't know what I was going to be leaving to. I've often said this stuff is like a puzzle.

The Clippers have no draft picks this year, and their two biggest stars-Blake Griffin and Chris Paul-both have the ability to opt out of their contracts this summer to become unrestricted free agents.

West was influential in drafting and not trading Klay Thompson. "And this owner [Ballmer] is going to be that kind of an owner", said West. He has also worked with the Los Angeles Lakers and the owner of Memphis Michael Heisley.

Inglewood is closing in on an negotiation agreement that could lead to the construction of a new Los Angeles Clippers arena.
