British Airways IT crash leaves thousands stranded; outsourcing to India blamed

BA says most flights running angry passengers face delays

"We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience this is causing our customers during this busy holiday period", British Airways said in its statement.

BA canceled all flights from Heathrow and Gatwick on Saturday after the IT outage, which it blamed on a power-supply problem.

The airline said it was running a full schedule at London's Gatwick airport on Monday and planned to operate all its long-haul flights from Heathrow, although some short-haul flights had been canceled.

BA recommends passengers should check the status of flights before travelling following cancellations and delays affected thousands of passengers at both Heathrow and Gatwick on Saturday.

All flights operated from Gatwick on Sunday but more than a third of services from Heathrow - mostly to short-haul destinations - were cancelled.

After the outage caused more than 1,000 flights to be delayed or cancelled, including BA's sister airlines in Spain, Iberia and Air Nostrum, focus quickly turned to Mr Cruz's handling of the company, having shut down the airline's computer department a year ago, slashing 700 jobs in the UK.

He also rejected any notion that the airline had been the subject of a cyberattack.

Speaking to customers via videos posted on the BA Twitter account, the company's chairman and CEO, Alex Cruz, said, "I know this has been a terrible time for customers".

Passengers faced hours-long lines to check in, reclaim lost luggage or rebook flights at Terminal 5, BA's hub at Heathrow.

The GMB said the disruption could have been prevented if the beleaguered airline had not cut "hundreds of dedicated and loyal" IT staff and contracted the work to India in 2016.

Heathrow told BA passengers who were affected by the cancelled flights not to come to the airport unless their flights were rebooked, or were on schedule to depart today.

Additional airport staff have been providing information and giving out free water and snacks, Heathrow said. "IT services are now provided globally by a range of suppliers and this is very common practice across all industries", Alex Cruz, Chief Executive of the airlines was quoted by The Registrar.

British Airways has presided over the worst airport chaos for decades, one of its own senior pilots admitted last night, as the disruption continues for a third day.

Thousands of passengers, including hundreds that were left stranded, were affected as more than 1,000 flights were affected due to a major global computer systems failure. Many of the Irish airline's customers switch to long-haul services offered by BA from Heathrow.
